The Karate Kid is Back!
The Karate Kid is Back!
For those of you who are fans of the movie, Karate kid, which took the world by storm in the 1984, the long wait is over. Opening up in theaters near you on June 11, 2010 is the Karate Kid Movie remake, a celebrated film that popularized karate in the US and around the world.
The karate kid remake is starred by the 11 year-old Jaden Smith, who will play the role of the “kid”, which was originally played by Ralph Macchio, as Danny Larusso. Jackie Chain will also grace the screen as he plays the role of Mr. Han. This character was popularized by Pat Morita, as Mr. Miyagi. Taraji P. Henson will be the kid’s mother in this film.
If you notice, some of the names have been changed, including the location of the story which will be set in China instead of America. Therefore, expect that the whole feel of the movie will be different from the original. Jackie Chan will teach Jaden Smith Kung-Fu, instead of Karate. At one point, the movie would have been called the Kung-Fu kid instead of Karate kid. But I guess plans have changed in terms of the movie’s title.
Other than the changes mentioned above, the plot is almost the same with the original Karate Kid Movie. Jaden, a young American boy, and his single mother re-located to another place (China). He does not like the whole idea of moving to another country. Not to mention that he is having a really hard time coping because he does not know how to speak Chinese.
Being a stranger to a country with a different culture, he quickly picks up trouble from the local bully and his friends. This is where Jackie Chan comes in as he saves him from getting beaten by these kids. In the process, he offers to help him learn Kung-Fu and speak Chinese.
Being a masterpiece of the 80s, the Karate Kid holds its own as clean and pure entertainment that the entire world watched and absolutely enjoyed. The Ralph Macchio and Pat Morta roles, stole the hearts of many back then. So, the question remains, will Jaden Smith, the 11 year-old son of Will Smith, deliver? Many have thrown in their skepticism as to whether this film would live up to the success of the original movie.
The 2010 version of the Karate Kid is anticipated by all 80s babies and the recent generations alike. For some this karate kid remake may not seem right, but let’s wait and see until it is shown in the theaters before we pass our judgment. If you want a sneak peak, you can check out some videos of the trailer as it was already released on the internet. And people who have seen it admitted to the fact that the movie itself is surprisingly watchable.
The Karate kid remake is produced by no other than Will Smith, who happens to be Jade’s father. It is directed by Herald Zwart.
Having said all these, there’s one more question left to be answered: Will there be some “wax on, wax off” moments too? I hope so, as this is one the reasons why the original karate kid will never be forgotten.
